The Matthews Academy Of Irish Dancing is an open and inclusive Academy. Our aim is for each member of the class to achieve their individual potential through hard work and practice in a fun and welcoming environment.
The school name 'Matthews' is a tribute to Jenny's and Rob's mother Phyllis (Matthews is Phyllis's maiden name) as Phyllis has always encouraged her children to achieve their goals in life.
Jenny Wilson-Flower began her dancing career at the age of 8 years under the direction of Mary Nightingale. From the very beginning Jenny knew that she wanted to teach as she was always keen to help out at classes. Jenny obtained her T.C.R.G in 1991 and her ADCRG in 2005.
Rob Wilson is a qualified TCRG and started dancing at early age. During a successful dancing career under the tutelage Danny Doherty Rob proudly achieved top 10 placing at the major competitions in solo competitions and numerous World Championships / All Ireland first places at Ceili and Figure dancing.
Once retiring from competing Rob toured the world for 8 years with Michael Flatleys 'Lord of Dance'. During this time Rob performed in Las Vegas for 4 years at the 'New York, New York' and 'Venetian' Hotels but now teaches as a part of the Matthews Academy team.
Lee-Anne Oneill has been dancing since the age of 4. Has competed all over the world gaining top 5 placings at British nationals and regional championships also received world medals for ceilis. Once retiring Lee-Anne decided to take her TCRG exam, Lee-Anne passed her TCRG in December 2010.
Mairéad Wilson began dancing at the age of 7 for The Kennedy School of Irish Dancing, Belfast. After a succesful competitive career competing at all levels including numerous World Championships in both Solo's and Ceili's, Mairéad joined Micheal Flatleys 'Lord of the Dance' aged 19. Touring and training with the show for 8 years Mairéad had the privilage of performing one of the female lead roles. Retiring from performing, Mairéad gained her TCRG qualification and joined the Matthews Academy team.
Since the opening of the school, pupils from the Matthews Academy have achieved national and World recognition in Solo dancing, Ceili dancing and Figure dancing. Pupils from the school have also gone onto perform in world acclaimed dance shows such as 'Lord of the Dance' and Riverdance'.
